Driveways

300 mm base under vehicular load · herringbone at 45° · double soldier course

A driveway is a pavement, not a patio with cars on it. The base doubles, the pattern changes to one that resists rotation under braking, and the edge has to survive a delivery truck cutting the corner. Herringbone at 45° to the direction of travel is not a style choice — it is the only pattern that locks under vehicular load.

01

How we build it

Dimensions you can hold us to
EXCAVATION
300 mm — vehicular Full depth to the apron and out past the wheel path, not just under the visible field.
COMPACTED BASE
225 mm ¾″ clean · 75 mm lifts · 95% Proctor Three lifts. Proof-rolled with a loaded truck before any sand goes down.
PATTERN
Herringbone at 45° to travel The only pattern that resists rotation under braking and turning.
EDGE
Double soldier course · concrete toe at apron The street edge takes the most abuse and gets the most restraint.
UNITS
80 mm where the loading warrants it Thicker units under a turning circle or a regular delivery route.

Most of what we are paid for is under the stone.

Six inches of base is the difference between a patio that moves in year three and one that does not.

300 mm · three lifts · proof-rolled

Full-depth cut and a loaded proof-roll before anything is set.

03

Setting

Herringbone 45° · double soldier

Questions people ask

Can you pave over the existing asphalt?
No, and anyone who offers to should worry you. Asphalt is a flexible pavement with its own failure pattern; setting pavers on top of it inherits every crack and every soft spot underneath. We take the asphalt out and build a proper section.
Will it handle an oil delivery truck?
Yes, if it is built to 300 mm with an 80 mm unit on the drive path — which is how we build them. Tell us at the survey what regularly comes up the drive and we will size the section for it.
