Fire is the reason a terrace gets used in October. It is also the one element on a patio that can hurt somebody, so the clearances are not negotiable and the burner is always a listed assembly with a key valve where an adult can reach it and a child cannot.

01

How we build it

Dimensions you can hold us to
FIREBOX
Firebrick core · 25 mm air gap The gap is what stops the veneer cracking as the core expands.
BURNER
CSA-listed assembly With a manual key valve located outside the heat envelope.
CLEARANCES
Per NFPA 58 To structures, combustibles, overhangs and property lines.
GAS
Sized line · key valve · air mixer Sized for the BTU of the burner, with the mixer set for the fuel.
MEDIA
Rated lava rock or tempered glass Never river stone — trapped moisture makes it explode.

Questions people ask

Wood or gas?
Gas, in almost every case on a terrace this close to a house. It lights instantly, it goes out instantly, it produces no embers to land on a cedar pergola, and it is the only one most HOAs and historic districts will approve. Wood is better company; gas is better neighbours.
