Outdoor Lighting
12 V · 2700 K · 300 W transformer at 60% load · direct-burial 12/2 · aimed after dark
Lighting is the difference between a terrace you use four months a year and one you use eight. Everything is 12 V and 2700 K — one colour temperature across the whole property, because mixed temperatures are the single most obvious sign of a job done in pieces. Fixtures are aimed after dark, with you standing there.
How we build it
- SYSTEM
- 12 V low voltage Safe to work on, and it can be extended without an electrician.
- COLOUR
- 2700 K across the property One temperature, everywhere. No exceptions.
- TRANSFORMER
- 300 W at 60% load 40% headroom for whatever gets added later.
- CABLE
- Direct-burial 12/2, 150 mm deep Sized so voltage drop at the far fixture stays inside tolerance.
- AIMING
- After dark, on site The only time it can actually be judged.

Before design
We walk the property after dark to see what is already there and what is missing.
Layout & load
300 W at 60%
Fixture schedule and cable runs sized for voltage drop at the furthest head.
Install
Direct-burial 12/2 · 150 mm
Cable buried, fixtures set, everything terminated in listed connectors.
Aiming
After dark, with you

Questions people ask
- Why 2700 K and not something cooler?
- 2700 K is close to the colour of a household lamp and of the last light of the day, so a lit garden reads as warm rather than as a car park. Anything cooler makes planting look grey and makes bluestone look like concrete.
- Can I add to the system later?
- Yes — that is why we size the transformer to run at 60%. There is 40% headroom for the next phase, so adding a pergola or a set of steps later does not mean replacing the whole system.
